Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Australian nursing registration

From April 2025, nurses registered in approved countries (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Singapore, Spain) with at least 1,800 hours of practice since 2017 may be eligible for direct registration without NCLEX-RN or OSCE exams. This significantly reduces processing time from 9-12 months to 1-6 months.

It depends on your country of qualification. Nurses from approved comparable countries (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Singapore, Spain) with sufficient practice hours may qualify for direct registration. Nurses from other countries (Philippines, India, most of Africa, Asia, Latin America) will need to complete the standard OBA pathway including NCLEX-RN and OSCE.

The OSCE examination fee is $4,000 AUD. The exam is conducted in Adelaide and Melbourne, Australia. You'll need to factor in travel and accommodation costs if you're based elsewhere.

You must demonstrate English proficiency through approved tests like IELTS (minimum 7.0 overall with no band below 7.0), OET (minimum B in all sections), or PTE Academic (minimum 65 overall with no score below 65). Some nurses from approved English-speaking countries may be exempt.

For Stream A (direct registration): 1-6 months. For Stream B (standard OBA): 12-18 months depending on AHPRA processing times, exam availability, and your preparation timeline. Starting early gives you the best chance of success.
