ANMAC Skills Assessment 2026: Full Assessment vs GradReady — Complete Guide

First, the most important fact: an ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) skills assessment is not a step in nursing registration. You do not need it to sit the NCLEX-RN, book an OSCE or apply for AHPRA registration. The NMBA says Anmac performs skills assessment for migration purposes, and that some applicants may be approved for skilled migration but do not meet the NMBA's registration requirements. Anmac's own eligibility checker tells nurses outside its listed exceptions to apply for Ahpra registration first.

You need an Anmac assessment only if a visa you are applying for requires one. If it does, getting it wrong costs you weeks and the assessment fee.

What Is ANMAC?

ANMAC is the independent body gazetted by the Minister for Immigration to assess the skills of nurses and midwives who want to migrate to Australia. It does not test your clinical skills in person — it is entirely a document-based assessment — and it does not decide registration: the NMBA does that, through the Self-check and its own assessment stages.

ANMAC assesses your:

• Nursing qualifications — does your degree/diploma meet the standard?
• Curriculum content — did your program include sufficient theory and clinical hours?
• Registration history — are you registered (or were you registered) in your home country?
• Work experience — do you have relevant clinical experience?
• English proficiency — do you meet language requirements?

If you need an Anmac assessment for a visa, Anmac's eligibility checker decides the route: it offers a Full Skills Assessment to the groups listed below and tells everyone else to apply for Ahpra registration first. Anmac's current fees page also lists Modified ($395) and Direct care ($545) assessments — confirm with Anmac which one applies to you. Anmac has announced new assessment names and fees that take effect when its new Skilled Migration Portal launches; it says it will confirm the launch date before the changes start, and the new fees won't apply to an application you have already paid for.

Full Skills Assessment — Step by Step

Who Needs It?

An internationally qualified nurse who needs a skills assessment for a skilled migration visa. We don't give migration advice — check whether your visa needs one with the Department of Home Affairs or a registered migration agent. AHPRA registration does not require it.

Eligibility Requirements

Anmac's eligibility checker (read 1 November 2026) offers a Full skills assessment to nurses in these groups:

Bachelor-level nursing from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada or Hong Kong:

• Current registration there
• At least 260 hours of work experience across 3 months within the last 5 years

Non-bachelor general nursing from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Singapore or Spain:

• At least 1,800 hours' practice since 1 January 2017

Qualified elsewhere after 1 January 2017:

• An exam that led to general registration in one of those six countries
• At least 1,800 hours' practice

Everyone else is told to apply for Ahpra registration first. Anmac's lists are not the NMBA's: Anmac includes Hong Kong and all of Canada, while the NMBA's comparable jurisdictions are the UK, Ireland, the US, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, Singapore and Spain.

Required Documents Checklist

Prepare these before starting your application:

1. Identity Documents

• Passport biodata pages (clear colour scan)
• One passport-sized photograph (recent, professional)
• Two additional forms of ID (birth certificate, driver's licence, national ID card)
• Change of name documents if your name has changed (marriage certificate, deed poll)

2. Nursing Qualification Documents

• Graduation certificate or testamur
• Full academic transcripts showing all subjects, grades, and hours
• Course syllabus or curriculum document showing:
  • Total theory hours
  • Total clinical placement hours
  • Subject breakdown by nursing area (medical-surgical, mental health, paediatrics, maternal, community)
• If your qualification is not in English: certified NAATI translation of all documents

3. Registration Evidence

• Current registration certificate from your home country's nursing board
• Certificate of Good Standing or verification of registration, sent to Anmac directly by your regulator by official email or post (Anmac can't accept a copy from you)
• Verification letter from your regulatory authority confirming:
  • Your registration number
  • Date of initial registration
  • Current registration status
  • Any conditions, restrictions, or disciplinary actions

4. Work Experience (if required)

• Professional reference letters on official letterhead from employers
• Letters must state: dates of employment, position title, hours worked, clinical area
• Payslips or employment contracts as supporting evidence

5. English Language Test Results

• IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic, or Cambridge results
• Scores must meet current AHPRA requirements
• Results must be less than 2 years old at time of application
• Or evidence of English exemption (5 years education in a recognised English-speaking country)

Document Format Requirements

ANMAC is strict about document quality:

• Colour scans at 600 dpi or higher (not black and white)
• PDF format only
• All pages of multi-page documents must be included
• Scans must be complete and legible — no cropped edges
• Colour copies of your original documents — Anmac asks for these, not certified copies

Mistakes that can cause rejection:

• Blurred or low-resolution copies (Anmac asks for scans at 600 dpi or higher; for some documents it accepts a high-quality photo)
• Black and white scans
• Missing pages from transcripts
• A Certificate of Good Standing you send yourself (Anmac accepts it only directly from the regulator)
• Missing curriculum/syllabus document (this is different from your transcript)

How to Apply

1. Create an account at the ANMAC online portal (anmac.org.au)
2. Select assessment type: Full Skills Assessment
3. Select the ANZSCO occupation that matches your nursing role (check the code against the official ANZSCO list before you submit)
4. Upload all documents in the required format
5. Pay the fee: $595 AUD by credit card
6. Submit and wait for processing

Processing Time

Anmac says processing times vary with the assessment pathway, how many applications it is receiving, and whether it needs more information from you or a third party. It publishes current average timeframes on the relevant application pages, as a guide only: when we checked on 2 November 2026, the Full skills assessment page gave 6-8 weeks for an assessment to start, and about 25 minutes to apply online (not counting document preparation); the GradReady page gave no wait time. Clear, complete documents and prompt replies to Anmac's requests help avoid delays.

Possible Outcomes

Suitable: Anmac finds your skills suitable for migration. You receive an outcome letter valid for 2 years from the date it is issued. This is not AHPRA registration — the NMBA's Self-check and assessment stages are separate.

Not Suitable: Your qualifications do not currently meet the standard. You may need to:

• Complete a bridging or adaptation program
• Gain additional clinical experience
• Provide further evidence of your qualifications

Request for Information: ANMAC needs additional documents. You typically have 28 days to respond. It does not mean you will be rejected.

GradReady Assessment

Who Needs It?

Australian nursing graduates who:

• Recently completed an accredited nursing program at an Australian university
• Need a skills assessment for skilled migration purposes (ANZSCO 254499 NEC)
• Are applying for a graduate visa or skilled visa

When You Can Apply

• Only in a GradReady window: Anmac says GradReady is available during graduation periods, and when we checked on 2 November 2026 its page gave 31 October 2026 – 31 January 2027
• You are eligible once you have recently completed your Australian course requirements and applied for Ahpra registration

Tips for a Successful Application

1. Start Document Gathering Early

Getting documents from overseas institutions and regulatory bodies can take a long time. A Certificate of Good Standing from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) can take 4-8 weeks. Start requesting documents immediately.

2. Get Your Curriculum Document

This document is easy to overlook. Your transcript shows subjects and grades. Your curriculum document shows the detailed content, theory hours, and clinical hours for each subject. Contact your university's registrar office to request this.

3. Use Certified NAATI Translators

Documents not in English must be translated by a NAATI-certified translator. Do not use informal translations — they will be rejected. NAATI translation costs approximately $50-150 per page.

4. Arrange Your Certificate of Good Standing

Ask your regulator to send your Certificate of Good Standing (or verification of registration) to Anmac directly, by official email or post, before you apply. Anmac can't accept a photocopy, fax or scanned copy from you or anyone else.

5. Scan Everything Properly

Scan in colour at 600 dpi or higher (Anmac accepts a high-quality photo for some documents, such as your passport). Save as PDF. Include every page of multi-page documents, including blank pages that are part of the official document.

6. Keep Copies of Everything

Save copies of every document you submit. If ANMAC requests additional information, you will need to reference what you already provided.

Country-Specific Tips

These apply only if Anmac's checker offers you an assessment. If it tells you to apply for Ahpra registration first — as it does for nurses outside its listed exceptions — start with the NMBA Self-check instead.

Philippines (PRC)

• Request your Certificate of Good Standing from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) early — processing takes 4-8 weeks
• Your BSN transcript must include clinical hours breakdown
• PRC Board Rating/Passing certificate is helpful but not always required

India (INC/State Nursing Council)

• Request verification from your State Nursing Council, not just your university
• Include your internship completion certificate

Nepal (Nepal Nursing Council)

• Request verification from the Nepal Nursing Council
• Include proficiency certificate if applicable

UK (NMC)

• NMC registration verification is straightforward — request online
• Your qualification from UK universities is generally well-recognised

Kenya (NCK)

• Nursing Council of Kenya Certificate of Good Standing
• Include KRN/KRCHN qualification documents
• Clinical hours documentation from your training hospital

Registration Is a Separate Process

An Anmac outcome does not register you, and registration does not wait for one. For registration:

1. Complete the NMBA Self-check, which assigns your stream from your qualification
