ANMAC Skills Assessment 2026: Full Assessment vs GradReady — Complete Guide

Before you can sit the NCLEX-RN, book an OSCE, or apply for AHPRA registration, you need one thing first: a positive skills assessment from ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council).

This assessment verifies that your overseas nursing qualification meets Australian standards. It is the gateway to your entire registration journey — get it wrong and you lose weeks and $595.

This guide covers both assessment types, exactly what documents you need, common rejection reasons, and how to get through on your first attempt.

What Is ANMAC?

ANMAC is the independent body that assesses whether internationally qualified nurses have the education and experience equivalent to an Australian-educated registered nurse. They do not test your clinical skills in person — it is entirely a document-based assessment.

ANMAC assesses your:

  • Nursing qualifications — does your degree/diploma meet the standard?
  • Curriculum content — did your program include sufficient theory and clinical hours?
  • Registration history — are you registered (or were you registered) in your home country?
  • Work experience — do you have relevant clinical experience?
  • English proficiency — do you meet language requirements?

  • Your qualification must have been completed after 1 January 2017
  • You must have at least 1,800 hours of paid nursing work since qualifying

Required Documents Checklist

Prepare these before starting your application:

1. Identity Documents

  • Passport biodata pages (clear colour scan)
  • One passport-sized photograph (recent, professional)

    • Your registration number

Document Format Requirements

ANMAC is strict about document quality:

  • Colour scans at 600 dpi or higher (not black and white)
  • PDF format only
  • All pages of multi-page documents must be included
  • Scans must be complete and legible — no cropped edges
  • Certified copies where specified (Justice of the Peace, notary public, or authorised certifier)

Tips for a Successful Application

1. Start Document Gathering Early

The biggest delay is getting documents from overseas institutions and regulatory bodies. A Certificate of Good Standing from the Philippines Nursing Board (PRC) can take 4-8 weeks. Start requesting documents immediately.

2. Get Your Curriculum Document

This is the most commonly missing document. Your transcript shows subjects and grades. Your curriculum document shows the detailed content, theory hours, and clinical hours for each subject. Contact your university's registrar office to request this.

3. Use Certified NAATI Translators

Documents not in English must be translated by a NAATI-certified translator. Do not use informal translations — they will be rejected. NAATI translation costs approximately $50-150 per page.

4. Check Certificate of Good Standing Timing

Your Certificate of Good Standing must be dated within 6 months of your ANMAC application. If you request it too early, it may expire before ANMAC processes your application. Time this carefully.

5. Scan Everything Properly

Use a flatbed scanner, not your phone camera. Scan in colour at 600 dpi minimum. Save as PDF. Include every page of multi-page documents, including blank pages that are part of the official document.

6. Keep Copies of Everything

Save copies of every document you submit. If ANMAC requests additional information, you will need to reference what you already provided.

Country-Specific Tips

Philippines (PRC)

  • Request your Certificate of Good Standing from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) early — processing takes 4-8 weeks
  • Your BSN transcript must include clinical hours breakdown
  • PRC Board Rating/Passing certificate is helpful but not always required

India (INC/State Nursing Council)

  • Request verification from your State Nursing Council, not just your university
  • BSc Nursing and GNM qualifications are both assessed
  • Include your internship completion certificate

Nepal (Nepal Nursing Council)

  • Request verification from the Nepal Nursing Council
  • Include proficiency certificate if applicable
  • PCL Nursing and BSc Nursing have different assessment pathways

UK (NMC)

  • NMC registration verification is straightforward — request online
  • Your qualification from UK universities is generally well-recognised

Kenya (NCK)

  • Nursing Council of Kenya Certificate of Good Standing
  • Include KRN/KRCHN qualification documents
  • Clinical hours documentation from your training hospital

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ANMAC Full Assessment and GradReady?

Full Assessment ($595) is for internationally qualified registered nurses (IQRNs) from any country. GradReady ($395) is only for recent graduates of Australian nursing programs who need to demonstrate readiness for practice. Most international nurses need the Full Assessment.

How long does the ANMAC assessment take?

Processing typically takes 4-6 weeks from submission of a complete application. Incomplete applications are returned and must be resubmitted, adding 2-4 weeks. Peak periods (January-March) may take longer.

What documents do I need for the ANMAC Full Assessment?

You need: certified copies of nursing qualifications and transcripts, course syllabus/curriculum details, certificate of registration from your home country, Certificate of Good Standing (less than 6 months old), certified English translations of non-English documents, passport and identity documents, and passport photographs.

Can my ANMAC assessment be rejected?

Yes. Common rejection reasons include: incomplete documentation, expired Certificate of Good Standing (must be less than 6 months old), uncertified copies, missing course syllabus details, and qualifications from unrecognised institutions. Always check ANMAC requirements before submitting.

How long is the ANMAC assessment valid?

The ANMAC assessment outcome letter is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. You must complete your registration process within this period, including passing any required exams (NCLEX-RN and OSCE for Stream B).

Do I need the ANMAC assessment before the NCLEX-RN?

Yes. You must have a positive ANMAC skills assessment outcome before you can register for the NCLEX-RN examination. The assessment determines whether you follow Stream A (streamlined) or Stream B (OBA with exams).

Is the ANMAC assessment fee refundable?

No, ANMAC fees are non-refundable once your application is submitted, even if your assessment is unsuccessful. Ensure all documents are complete and correct before submitting to avoid wasting the fee.
