Indian Nurse Registration in Australia 2026: BSc Nursing & GNM Complete Guide
If you trained as a nurse in India, the route to Australian registration is well documented — though it requires careful planning.
This guide covers both BSc Nursing and GNM qualifications, the documents Indian nurses need, and practical preparation tips.
Which Indian Qualifications Are Accepted?
For registration, the NMBA's Self-check decides this. It assesses your exact qualification and assigns Stream A (Orientation Part 1, then apply), Stream B (Orientation Part 1, Portfolio, then the NCLEX-RN and the OSCE) or Stream C (upgrade the qualification first). If your qualification has not been assessed before, Ahpra assesses it at the Portfolio stage. (Anmac's skills assessment is a separate, migration-only process: its own checker tells India-qualified nurses outside its listed exceptions to apply for Ahpra registration first.)
BSc Nursing (4-Year Program)
- Status: Enter the exact degree details from your certificate in the Self-check to see your stream
- Requirements: Must have been registered with the State Nursing Council or INC
- Clinical hours: Your program must demonstrate adequate theory and clinical placement hours
GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery — 3.5-Year Diploma)
- Status: The Self-check decides; if it places you in Stream C, the only way forward is to upgrade the qualification (for example, a Bachelor of Nursing)
- Not the same as the IQRN standard's Pathway 2: that route needs a qualification completed on or after 1 January 2017 plus general registration through the exam process of an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction (the UK, Ireland, the US, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, Singapore or Spain) plus at least 1,800 hours' practice in any of those jurisdictions
Post Basic BSc Nursing (2-Year Program)
- Status: Ahpra assesses qualifications held in combination (such as GNM plus Post Basic BSc) at the Portfolio stage if they have not been assessed together before
Criminal history — a revised standard applies from 15 July 2026. The National Boards' revised Criminal history registration standard took effect on 15 July 2026. Every applicant must declare their criminal history in all countries, including Australia.
Some applicants also need an international criminal history check — Ahpra's international criminal history checks page explains who needs one and how.
A criminal history does not automatically bar you. The Board can refuse, impose conditions, require an assessment, or take no action. Start it early: overseas checks can take time.
Your Registration Pathway
If the Self-check places you in Stream B (outcomes-based assessment), the steps are:
| Step | What | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | INC/State Nursing Council verification | 2-8 weeks |
| 2 | English language test (IELTS/OET/PTE/TOEFL/Cambridge) | 1-3 months prep |
| 3 | Self-check, Orientation Part 1 (within 90 days) and Portfolio | A few weeks |
| 4 | NCLEX-RN exam (register with Pearson VUE through the link on your IQNM dashboard; the NMBA gives you 180 days from your Portfolio being established to complete the MCQ, or it closes your case — check your dashboard; result within six weeks) | 3-6 months prep — start before your Portfolio is finalised |
| 5 | OSCE exam (pay within 120 days, then sit within 180 days of paying; a visa first if you live overseas) | 2-4 months prep |
| 6 | AHPRA registration (apply within 90 days of your OSCE result) | 4-10 weeks |
| Total | About 10-20 months (our estimate) |
For every fee on this pathway, see our 2027 fees guide. Visa options and costs are a matter for the Department of Home Affairs — we don't give migration advice.
Indian-Specific Document Requirements
Indian Nursing Council (INC) Verification
Note (written April 2026, not re-checked since): The Indian Nursing Council Act 1947 was repealed by the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Act 2023 (commenced 29 February 2024), and the INC's functions are transitioning to the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC). Check the current INC/NNMC arrangements for verification letters — starting with the INC website (indiannursingcouncil.org) — before you request one.
- Request a verification letter from the INC or your State Nursing Council
- This confirms your registration number, date of registration, and current status
- Processing time varies significantly — INC can take 4-8 weeks, some State Councils are faster
- Fee: approximately INR 5,000-10,000
State Nursing Council Registration
- You need a Certificate of Good Standing from your State Nursing Council (not just INC), and one from every other regulator outside Australia you have been registered with in the past five years
- For your registration application, each regulator must send its certificate (or a Certificate of Registration Status) directly to Ahpra; each is valid for three months from the date of issue
- Check the Council's processing time early, but time your request so the certificate is still within three months of issue when you lodge your registration application
Academic Documents
- BSc Nursing degree certificate
- Complete mark sheets (all years/semesters)
- Course syllabus showing theory and clinical hours per subject (request from your university — this is different from your mark sheets)
- Internship completion certificate
- If your documents are in a language other than English, get NAATI-certified translations
Employment Records
- A certified Statement of Service from your employer(s) covering the past five years, for your registration application
English Language Requirements
The accepted tests are IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge C1/C2, taken at a test centre (at-home versions are not accepted).
For Indian nurses specifically:
| Test | Pros for Indian Nurses | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Widely available across India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Pune, etc.). Many coaching centres available. | Academic writing (Task 2 essay) can be challenging. |
| OET | Healthcare content is familiar. Writing is a referral letter, not an essay. | Fewer test centres and dates in India. Check current fees with each provider. |
| PTE Academic | Computer-based, fast results (1-2 days). Available in major Indian cities. | Unusual format requires specific preparation. |
Required scores: IELTS Academic overall 7, with 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing (writing reduced from 7.0 in March 2025). Minimums for OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge C1 Advanced changed for sittings on or after 23 April 2026; IELTS and C2 Proficiency did not. Read the complete English requirements guide.
NCLEX-RN Preparation for Indian Nurses
NCSBN's October 2026 list has NCLEX-RN centres in Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Mumbai, New Delhi, Noida, Pune and Surat — there is no Kochi or Kolkata centre on it. At these international centres your passport is the only accepted ID.
Key Differences Between Indian Nursing Education and NCLEX
- Pharmacology naming: Indian nursing uses both generic and brand names. NCLEX uses US generic names predominantly. Know both.
- Delegation and scope: The RN role in Australia/US has specific delegation rules that differ from Indian hospital practice. Management of Care (15-21% of NCLEX) heavily tests this.
- Clinical judgment: NCLEX tests application and analysis — you need to decide what to do, not just know the facts.
- Mental health nursing: Psychosocial Integrity is 6-12% of the NCLEX-RN test plan. Therapeutic communication, crisis intervention, and psychiatric medications are high-yield topics.
Preparation: GdayNurse offers 5,000+ NCLEX questions aligned with the 2026 test plan. Try 25 free questions. Read 10 strategies to pass NCLEX first time.
OSCE Preparation for Indian Nurses
The OSCE requires travelling to Adelaide or Melbourne. You cannot take it in India.
Australian Clinical Context for Indian Nurses
- Patient-centred communication: Australian healthcare is more collaborative than hierarchical. Patients are addressed by name, involved in decisions, and asked for consent before every procedure.
- ISBAR handover: If you are used to informal handover, practise ISBAR (Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) extensively — it is the standard structure in Australia.
- Medication names: Paracetamol (not acetaminophen), adrenaline (not epinephrine), salbutamol (not albuterol). Learn Australian generic names.
- Infection control: Hand hygiene (5 moments), standard precautions and PPE — practise them until they are automatic.
Preparation: GdayNurse offers 125 OSCE stations with AI voice simulation. Try 2 free stations. Read the complete OSCE preparation guide.
Visas
Registration and visas are separate: the NMBA registers you, and the Department of Home Affairs decides visas. We don't give migration advice — for visa options, costs and eligibility, see the Department of Home Affairs or a registered migration agent. One registration rule does involve a visa: if you live overseas, Ahpra will not offer you an OSCE date until you have provided an Australian visa.
Indian Nursing Community in Australia
Indian nurses work across Australia. Adelaide and Melbourne are where the RN OSCE is held, so plan your exam travel to one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is BSc Nursing from India accepted in Australia?
For registration, the NMBA Self-check decides: enter your exact BSc Nursing details and it assigns Stream A, B or C. You must have been registered with the INC or a State Nursing Council. Anmac's skills assessment is separate and only for migration — its checker tells India-qualified nurses outside its listed exceptions to apply for Ahpra registration first.
Can GNM nurses register in Australia?
The NMBA Self-check decides how your GNM is treated. If it places you in Stream C, you need to upgrade the qualification (for example, a Bachelor of Nursing) first. The '1 January 2017 + 1,800 hours' rule belongs to Pathway 2 of the IQRN registration standard, which also requires general registration through the exam process of an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction and 1,800 hours' practice in any comparable jurisdiction.
How long does INC verification take?
Indian Nursing Council verification can take 4-8 weeks. Some State Nursing Councils are faster. Start this process early: overseas documents can be slow.
How much do Indian nurses earn in Australia?
Graduate RNs earn $65,000-75,000 AUD/year ($5,400-6,250/month). With 5+ years experience, Australian salaries reach $85,000-95,000.
Where can I take the NCLEX-RN in India?
NCSBN's October 2026 list has NCLEX centres in Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Mumbai, New Delhi, Noida, Pune and Surat (there is no Kochi or Kolkata centre). You do not need to travel to Australia for the NCLEX-RN — only the OSCE requires travelling to Adelaide or Melbourne.
Which English test is best for Indian nurses?
IELTS Academic is widely available across India; OET uses healthcare content; PTE Academic returns results quickly. The NMBA says the minimum scores are benchmarked so that no test is easier than another, so choose the format that suits you. All three — and TOEFL iBT and Cambridge — are accepted when taken at a test centre.
