🇦🇺AHPRA Overview
What is AHPRA?
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the national organization responsible for registering health practitioners in Australia. For internationally qualified nurses, AHPRA manages the registration process in partnership with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
- National regulator for health practitioners
- Works with NMBA for nursing registration
- Ensures patient safety and quality care
- Manages ongoing registration and compliance
Why Register with AHPRA?
Registration with AHPRA is mandatory to practice nursing in Australia:
- Legal requirement to practice as a nurse in Australia
- Provides professional recognition and protection
- Access to employment across all Australian states/territories
- Pathway to permanent residency through skilled migration
Registration Types
AHPRA offers different registration categories:
- General Registration - Full unrestricted practice
- Provisional Registration - Recent graduates under supervision
- Limited Registration - Specific purpose or time-limited
- Non-practising Registration - Maintain registration without active practice
🛤️Registration Pathways
Standard Pathway
The most common pathway for internationally qualified nurses:
- Complete skills assessment with approved authority
- Meet English language requirements
- Pass OSCE or other clinical assessment
- Submit AHPRA application with all documentation
- Suitable for most international nurses

- New Zealand-registered nurses use a separate trans-Tasman mutual-recognition arrangement (not this list)
Supervised Practice Pathway
For nurses who need additional experience:
- Work under supervision while completing requirements
- Gain Australian clinical experience
- Complete Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA)
- May be combined with bridging programs
- Pathway to full registration
📋Requirements
English Language Requirements
You must demonstrate English proficiency through one of these tests. The minimums below apply to tests sat on or after 23 April 2026 (different scores apply for tests sat on or before 22 April 2026 — verify on the AHPRA Accepted English Language Tests page):
Qualifications Assessment
For internationally qualified nurses, two distinct assessments may apply — they serve different purposes and you may need both:
- IQNM Self-check (free) at iqnm.ahpra.gov.au — AHPRA/NMBA registration assessment that determines your Stream A, B, or C pathway
- IQNM Portfolio + Orientation Part 1 — full IQNM assessment (~$640 AUD) for AHPRA registration
- ANMAC skills assessment — separate process for migration purposes (skilled visa applications), ~$595 AUD full assessment, validity 2 years
- Provide certified copies of qualifications, transcripts, and course details (NAATI-certified translation if not in English)
- Registration from country of training required; both assessments confirm comparability to Australian standards in their own way
Clinical Competency
Demonstrate clinical competency through:
- OSCE - Objective Structured Clinical Examination
- Or completed NCLEX-RN (may satisfy requirements)
- Or Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) with supervised practice
- Must meet NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice
